CAF-Africa PPE initiative for African Community Health Workers wins $250,000 grant from Bohemian Foundation

Bohemian Foundation has awarded a $250,000 grant to COVID-19 Action Fund for Africa (CAF-Africa) to safeguard routine health services at the last mile in 20+ African countries.

The grant supports the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE) through CAF-Africa, the only effort dedicated to mobilizing PPE for one million Community Health Workers (CHWs) serving 400 million citizens on the continent.

“We shouldn’t expect CHWs to do their critical work without PPE. As local heroes, CHWs must have access to appropriate PPE required to safely do their jobs bringing health services to households and communities,” said Erin Ricci, Global Programs Manager at Bohemian Foundation.

CAF-Africa is an award winning radically collaborative effort spearheaded by over 30 organizations dedicated to protecting Community Health Workers (CHWs) on the frontlines of Africa’s COVID-19 response. CAF-Africa matches donated PPE with government-identified gaps and conducts end-use verification processes with in-country partners to document the arrival and distribution of the supplies. Integrated with national responses, this is the only known effort that pools resources for PPE items specifically for community health workers in Africa.
