Community health workers will lead Uganda’s fight against COVID-19 says Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda as he launched a new Community Engagement Strategy for COVID-19 Response that relies on last mile health workers. The government has pledged to pay allowances to CHWs on the Village Health Teams.
“The investment we are going to do, to pay 100,000 Shillings to one village health worker, the return on investment on that for Uganda, will be much bigger than the investments that we are putting on the roads, the dams and all the other infrastructure we are doing.”
The COVID-19 Action Fund for Africa has donated over seven million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to Ministry of Health Uganda to safeguard 179,175 CHWs nationwide.
